Protecting Vulnerable Populations Through Background Checks

Welcome to the National Background Check Program (NBCP) Technical Assistance website, sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This website is designed to assist U.S. States and Territories in establishing State programs for the purpose of conducting background checks on all prospective employees for direct-access positions with long-term care facilities and providers. This site is also available to the public for the purpose of providing information and education about the NBCP and grantee-State programs. Registered users from grantee States can access resources related to conducting background checks on direct-access employees and submit requests for technical assistance in the development of their own State-level programs. CNA maintains the list of approved users for this website and is contracted by CMS to provide technical assistance to grantee States. If you are a grantee-State registered user, please login above.

CMS posted a memorandum on September 29th, 2017 to their State Survey Agency Directors providing advance notice that the NBCP grant solicitation will be removed from www.grants.gov. The deadline for States to submit an application for the ninth (and final) solicitation for the NBCP is December 15th, 2017. States are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to participate. CMS has requested that States who intend to apply for the NBCP grant fill out this “Notice of Intent to Apply” form and send it to the Background Checks mailbox at background_checks@cms.hhs.gov by October 31, 2017.
