CMS National Background Check Pilot Program

In 2004, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) piloted a similar program with seven States to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing and conducting federal-level background checks on prospective employees of direct access facilities and providers who would have direct access to patients. The pilot program explored implementation and evaluation issues, focusing on establishing lessons learned and best practices.
