Most States have some form of background check process in place, regardless of whether they are already participating in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) National Background Check Program (NBCP). However, among the existing State background check systems, there is variation in the employee types covered and the types of background checks conducted. To learn more about a State's background check program, click the State name below. (Note: For NBCP grantee States, a brief abstract that reflects the State's proposed program at the time CMS issued its grant, and the amount of the grant, are also included.)
